PPSNYS' 110th President Takes Office

President's Welcome

CPWelcome to the Professional Photographers' Society of New York State (PPSNYS).
Thank you to all who are taking the time to read this, the first of my Presidents Messages. First of all, I want to thank Honey for all of her hard work and dedication throughout her years as an officer and as President. She was ever present setting up and maintaining our Facebook presence, which has really increased the publics exposure to professional photography. I would also like to thank the members of PPSNYS for having the confidence in me to elect me as President. PPSNYS has been a huge part of my life since 1985 and the relationships I have made through my involvement are the most precious. In fact, I met my husband, Ray, through PPSNYS. It doesnt get better than that!
Being your President is a responsibility I dont take lightly. It is my intention to visit each section and discuss with members on a local level their concerns and ideas, to make PPSNYS a thriving organization once again. I kind of feel like I am preaching to the choir, but the most valuable benefits of membership, camaraderie and friendship, come from being involved - attending convention, working on committees, serving as a section or state officer. In an effort to expand the pool of participating members, I will be calling on the general membership to serve on a variety of committees to help move PPSNYS forward in these challenging times. Im sure I can count on each of you to support me in my efforts!
During the PNE Convention, I spoke with members from across New York State and the most exciting thing to me is that we have many young, talented members with energy and ideas. I cant wait to pick their brains and implement their wonderful ideas!
It is very important to me that everyone knows that I am always available. Please never hesitate to pick up the phone or drop an email if there is a question or concern. I havent been very involved in the Facebook environment, but Im trying and I promise to work harder at that.
Im so excited about our upcoming PPSNYS Workshop. I will be in Jane Connor-zisers class. There is always so much to learn and you cant find a better instructor than Jane. If you have already registered, Im looking forward to spending the week together. If you have not - dont wait any longer. It is the best investment you can make in your photographic education!
Im looking forward to a wonderful, rewarding year. Lets make it fabulous together!
Chris

Byron Sands
Program Overview:
Everything You Need to Know in Today's Digital World

Byron Sands has found that many photographers do not understand the controls of their digital camera, how it is actually constructed and are often not sure how it relates to their film camera from bygone days.  Digital image/file formats are often difficult for non-techies to grasp.  While he will present a lot of technical information, he explains it in terms that don't require one to be an engineer.
Camera basics will be discussed including capture modes, lens, shutter, aperture, ISO and the interrelationship between them.  Other topics include digital lenses and digital sensors - how they work, what "field of view crop" means and why that matters to you; color spaces, white balance, and color temperature and how they apply to your images and battery technologies.  And finally, we will discuss digital image formats and what you need to know about them to preserve your images.  Questions will be welcome!
You will come away with an understanding of how your digital camera actually works and how to apply that knowledge to capturing the images you desire.
Biography
Byron was born in Arkansas but grew up in North Africa and Europe. Moving to Morocco at age 3, then Greece and then Germany, he returned to the US in time to graduate high school in Arizona and went on to earn the BA degree from the University of Arizona. He later earned the technology diploma from the Albuquerque Technical Institute and received graduate training at the University of New Mexico and the Harvard University School of Business Executive Program. Byron also earned the Professional Photography Certificate of the New York Institute of Photography.
Byron spent over 3 decades in technology and digital imaging, working in research and development for the world’s largest technology companies: Hewlett-Packard, Compaq and IBM. Byron began his career in digital imaging in 1977 when he joined IBM Research & Development in Boulder, CO and retired from Hewlett-Packard Office of Strategy and Technology as a Distinguished Technologist 32 years later.
Byron led engineering teams in the early 80’s that pioneered digital high speed inkjet scanner/duplicators, in the late 80’s that pioneered laser printers, in the early 90’s that pioneered low power, high speed modems and cell phone connectivity in laptop computers, and in the later 90’s that brought digital multimedia into the personal computer. Byron holds patents in the area of digital communications. Byron was appointed Distinguished Technologist by Hewlett-Packard in 2006 and retired from HP in 2009. Through his technology career, Byron held roles of Chief Technology Officer, Vice President of Engineering and Director of Advanced Technology.
Byron moved his studio from the hills above Monterey Bay to Hallstead in northeast Pennsylvania in 2009 – west coast to east coast. Endless Mountains Studios is focused on high school seniors and family portraiture.
Byron has active professional memberships in PPA, Senior Portrait Artists and NAPP. At the state and local levels, Byron is a member of Texas PPA, PPSNYS, PPAofPA, STPPNY and Northeast Pennsylvania Professional Photographers. Past memberships include PP California, PP Greater Bay Area and the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers and British Professional Photographers Associates. Byron is a Certified Professional Photographer and is a PA Certification Liaison to the Professional Photographic Certification Commission.

PPSNYS Workshop "Summer Camp for Photographers" Part 3

"A Solid Foundation"with Don Chick

A Solid Foundation is essential to ensure success as you build your portrait studio. This class will provide just that – a solid foundation in understanding the key elements of digital photography combined with essential knowledge that is needed to create a well-crafted professional portrait.
No longer will you need to look at your digital camera and be overwhelmed by all of the buttons, settings and messages or use the “wing-it” approach to digital photography. Through Don’s easy-to-understand style of teaching, the student of this class will gain a working-level understanding of important technical ingredients to a successful image: white balance, histograms, raw files and conversion. Students will also gain a deeper appreciation for light and learning to see and applying that understanding to studio and location portrait lighting. This class combines lecture with hands-on learning so that students can go home and immediately implement the learning at their own studios! This course will enable each photographer to move forward with confidence as they reach toward the next level in their portrait business. Capital Champlain Section

We held our print naming party on Monday evening, to get ready for the PPA Image Competition.  Each year we get together at a member's studio, display the prints we are getting ready for competition, and help each other come up with titles for competition prints.  We had 13 members present and we were all inspired by the creativity in the room.  What a great learning opportunity!  Seven Master Photographers and a Craftsman were here to share there knowledge and expertise.

Anyone who doesn't take advantage of the wonderful opportunities that PPSNYS offers is truly missing out!
